Turned out in my DNS I had all of the records that Office 365 instructions told me to add during my onboarding, but there was an SRV record that had already been there (automatically added by cPanel on my hosting account). I will give this a try later. Worked about a month before problem started reoccurring. That was the closest I ever came to a fix.

First I suspected that problem was in different versions and builds of Outlook 2016 (Office 365), but as it seems, that is not the case - solution worked on random versions. Went ahead and restarted laptop this morning to see if that would force the Disable WAM key to take effect. Received several password prompts over the course of the next few hours. Restarted Outlook but did not restart laptop.

This time the number of indexed items decreased significantly until reporting that indexing was complete. I removed Outlook from the locations to be indexed and then tried rebuild again. The number of indexed items remained exactly the same.

As noted above, they had been coming fast and furious. After rebuilding the index, I soon noticed that the password prompts had completely ceased. Search was back to normal.But here is the strange part. I had no further problems with Outlook search. The number of indexed items increased until reporting that indexing was complete.

Bingo, no more password prompts! So, I'm not exactly sure why the regedit modification didn't work the first time around, but after rebuilding the search index, it did indeed kick in and stop the password prompts. I did the regedit modification again to disable WAM and restarted Outlook. Much to my dismay, the recurring password prompts quickly started up again. I removed the registry key and restarted Outlook. It seemed that the issue was resolved so I determined to remove the Disable WAM registry key that I had created a couple of weeks ago since it had been seemingly ineffectual.
